Getting contact lenses for the first time is exciting — and a little nerve-wracking. Most first-time wearers have the same questions. Here are honest answers to all of them.
Will it hurt?
No. A correctly fitted contact lens should be undetectable after a few minutes. There may be a very slight awareness of the lens when you first put it in, but this fades quickly. If there is actual discomfort, burning, or pain, remove the lens and check it for damage or debris.
How long does it take to get used to them?
Most people adapt within a few days. Your eyes adjust to the sensation, your hands learn the routine, and inserting and removing becomes quick. Give yourself a week before deciding they are not for you.
How long can I wear them each day?
Start with 4–6 hours on your first day and gradually increase over the first week. Most people comfortably wear lenses for 10–12 hours a day once adapted. Always follow your optometrist's guidance on maximum wear time.
What if I cannot get it in?
This is very common at first. Relax, look straight ahead, hold your upper and lower lids open firmly, and place the lens gently on the white of your eye. It will slide into position. The key is not to blink too early. Our team will show you the technique when you collect your lenses.
What if it gets stuck?
Contact lenses cannot go behind your eye — the anatomy of your eye does not allow it. If a lens feels stuck, add a few drops of lubricating eye drops, look away from the lens, and blink slowly. It will move.
Can I nap in them?
It is better not to. Even a short nap with lenses in can cause temporary redness when you wake up because your eyes receive less oxygen while closed. Remove them before any sleep.
